I am Legend (1954)

Here's a recommendation for an old story that's been dusted off more times than I care to remember. "I am Legend" by Richard Matheson is one of those inspirational books that defines a genre. But what genre is it?

We'll, it's not zombies, but don't let that put you off.

Our hero is Robert Neville, the only living survivor of an epidemic that has killed everyone he ever knew. But he's not alone. Each night as the sun sets, Neville must barricade himself in his house and hide from the local Vampires.

It's not a long story, but it's a great story. Matheson first published the novel in 1954 and much of the content ages well. It's not surprising that it has been the inspiration of at least 3 films. Ironically, it has probably had more of an influence on the Zombie genre than on the Vampire genre.

My favourite bits?

Well, you can't help but love Ben Cortman: "Come out, Neville!"

And there's the whole episode with the dog - fantastic stuff.

Mustn't forget the arrival of Ruth!

The ending falls a little flat, but only a little. This is a classic. Go out and buy it!
