Lanzarote (2000)

Lanzarote by Michel Houellebecq was an impulse buy from Oxfam. Yup, doing a little bit of work for charidy. The quote on the front talks about 'high comedy' so I was expecting a bit of a laugh. I think I must have missed something along the way.

I know that I can be a bit of a Heathen at times (no, I can!), but this is one of those books that I'm obviously too stupid to understand. Or perhaps it's just crap!

Les Dawson's Secret Notebooks (2007)

I've just finished Les Dawson's Secret Notebooks. This book is a collection of extracts from Les's notebooks compiled after his death in 1993. Everything you might expect is featured: from classic Cissie and Ada sketches right through to a selection of Les's trademark 'I wouldn't say my wife's fat, but...' type jokes. You get some mementoes of his Blankety Blank days, and who can forget the magnificent Cosmo Smallpiece!

Colin (2009)

Colin is the zombie film that caused a bit of a stir about a year ago. I'd been holding out to see it and finally the time was right: The wife was out at her Bomb-making Classes and the kids were in bed. Let the good times roll!

First impressions mean a lot and unfortunately, my first impressions were bad. The sinking feeling started when I realised that it wasn't widescreen. I know it was a big deal that this film was made for about 4 pence, but come on! It didn't get much better. The whole thing had a 'straight to YouTube' feeling as if it was put together by a University Art Group.

Elixir Electric Guitar Strings

I've been trialling a set of Elixir strings on my Strat for about 2 months now and I can honestly say that they're as good to play today as they were when I first put them on. I'm using a set of 10s with... and I'm reading from the packet here... a patented NANOWEB(r) Coating. Hell yeah! It's worth it for the the name alone! Don't you just love anything Nano!

I didn't realise you could do this. Isn't technology wonderful! Here are a few songs from my sometimes disco/funk band, magic44. Let me know what you think.

The Spy Who Loved Me (1962)

Bloody Hell, this book was hard work! It's Bond in the style of Mills and Boon. Yes, you heard me... Mills and bloody Boon! Aaaagh!

Dead Beyond The Fence (2010)

I'm getting through books like nobody's business at the moment. Maybe it's my new glasses. Dead Beyond the Fence by Brian Kaufman has just taken me two days to polish off. Granted, it's not the thickest of reads, but credit to Brian, I couldn't put the damn thing down!

Blood Meridian (1985)

I just finished reading Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy and have been feeling pretty stupid. Most of the time I didn't have a clue what it was going on about.

So I had a quick scan on the internet and cheered myself up... nobody else understands it either! What surprised me though was finding out that this book is considered to be one of the American masterpieces of the 20th Century.
