Pimp My Skylark - Painting!

I've been doing a little more on my project to pimp my skylark ukulele. I know I should have maybe done some more work on preparing the uke, but I've been desperate to try out my new paints and paintbrushes!

This is the artwork I mashed up when I first
considered some Yusaku Hanakuma Ukulele Design
The artwork is unmistakably by my hero Yusaku
Hanakuma featuring one of my favourite of his
characters: Afro!

A Taste of Leeds

Today I journeyed to central Leeds in the name of shopping. As is often the case on these sorts of trips... I came home with nothing... but it still cost me a fortune! My daughter E-Uke on the other hand did really well out of the whole deal. ;-)

As is customary these days, I've got a few random snaps to share with you from the day's adventures. Most of these really are just snaps; It was so rushed that I didn't have any chance to line up many of the shots. They're blurred and badly framed, but you know what... that's exactly what this day has been like... so it's a pretty good reflection. Enjoy a little peek into my life...

Uh oh! Is that my train?
Look at those clouds!
National Rail had fleeced me before the day had begun!
Better still, the train was packed with Hull fans off to
get beat by Barnsley. Things really got exciting when
some Leeds fans got on in Selby. I had to stand the
whole way, right in the middle. Great :-/

The Scarlet Plague (1912)

Jack London's 1912 story, The Scarlet Plague came to me as a recommendation by a gentleman on Google+ called Andrew Coffman. I've never read any Jack London before, but I must admit to being a fan of some of the films that have been adapted from his books. I can't recall the names, but I seem to remember stories involving huskies, snow, and men with beards. What a fantastic combination!

Talking of huskies, snow and men with beards...
do you remember Ukulele Russ? I think there might be
a musical collaboration in the wings! Watch this space...

How to play the Chicken Shake like a Boss!

A couple of weeks ago I paid a visit to Beverley Music Centre. It was the first time I've ever been to this shop and I shared some ukulele / banjo pictures on Google+ for all the people who like that sort of stuff. I bought a couple of things on my visit, one of which was a "Chicken Shake". Picking it up yesterday I realised that I don't have a clue how to play it. Time to go back to school!

The Game of Thrones - Series 2 (2012)

Following my recent introduction to series 1 of Game of Thrones, it was only a matter of time before I got a chance to watch series 2.

Daniel Hulbert Ukuleles

Today's post is a celebration of good friend and fellow ukulele enthusiast: Mr Daniel Hulbert. Daniel is a shining light in what is a growing army of people who are building their own musical instruments. I can't begin to count the number if times that Daniel's come to my rescue with advice and ideas for my builds and I just love chewing the fat with him over his projects.

"Someone on YouTube suggested that I make a lightsaber
shaped ukulele. It honestly upset me a little bit. It makes
me feel that people merely see me as a trained monkey
that only makes novelty ukes. It made me mad. It made
me...okay. It does sound pretty fun. I'll do it!!
Does anybody have any bananas?"

Star Trek: Crew (2009)

I wouldn't say that I’m a crazy mad Star Trek fan these days, but I used to love it. I've talked about this before, but my favourite era was the original series with Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura, Scotty, Sulu and Chekov. What a great cast. I've got most of the films on DVD, but it’s been a long time since I watched any of them. I’ll watch the new film "Into Darkness" at some point too no doubt, but the new stuff hasn't hooked me in the same way yet. I live in hope!

Pimp My Skylark - Gettin' Naked!

Welcome to the first post in the long-running project I call "Pimp my Skylark". You may remember me talking about a Skylark Ukulele I'd bought just after Christmas especially for pimping. I didn't know what that meant at the time and I'm still not certain! I figure this is the type of project that I can make up as I'm going along and pick up and put down as I see fit. Today I picked it up!
